Engage! KW was first introduced in 2006 by The KWCF as a program to raise awareness of community issues and provide information about potential philanthropy. An immediate commitment was not required other than to agree that when the time was right, participants would give back to the community.
In 2010, the Engage! KW program was given a twist. Modeled after the London Community Foundation's Engage! initiative, The KWCF developed a seven-session program focused on cultivating community engagement. Goals of the program were to increase overall awareness of the non-profit community, build future capacity, and create knowledgeable volunteers and philanthropists.
A volunteer leadership team was established. This dynamic group of individuals was instrumental in spreading the word of the Engage! KW program to their networks. After an overwhelming response to a call for applications, 34 participants were selected to participate in the program.
Session topics have ranged from non-profit governance and strategic philanthropy to a case study that allowed members to dive in and provide hands-on help to a local non-profit seeking assistance. Guest speakers from various professional backgrounds helped guide the participants along the path to becoming more engaged community leaders.
Plans are being formulated to launch the second round of this powerful community building initiative.
