One of the things Kathleen Bissett remembers fondly about her parents, Constance and Frederick Landmann, was their dedication to philanthropy. " Each year, they allocated $1000 to be donated to our charity of choice," recalls Kathleen.
It was that inherent philosophy to give back to their local community that drove Frederick and Constance to establish the Landmann Family Fund with the Vermont Community Foundation. Having moved to Vermont from New York City, they found themselves at home, wanting to make roots and make a difference now, and for years to come.
With Frederick passing in 2003 and Constance in 2011, both Kathleen and her sister Meryl wanted to continue the tradition that their parents had started. Kathleen, having long since moved to Waterloo Region, wanted to find a way to honour her parents, while supporting her local community. Kathleen and her husband Gerald soon discovered that foundations based in the United States are unable to grant to Canadian charitable organizations. "There was just no way around it," commented Kathleen, "the Vermont Community Foundation worked through each scenario, but there was just no option available to us to grant to our local community through a US Foundation."
The KWCF was contacted to act as the recipient of a donation to establish a Landmann Family Fund locally. After months of communications with the Vermont Community Foundation, the Bissett's were finally able to realize their parents' dream, here in KW. "We are fortunate to have the opportunity to give back to the community that has given us so much, and carry on the tradition started by my parents all those years ago." Kathleen and Gerald plan to focus their support in the areas of arts and culture, education, and health and wellness. "We're looking forward to working with The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation to support the causes that mean the most to us," adds Kathleen.
