The Smart & Caring Grant Program was inspired by the vision of Canada’s Governor General, the Right Honourable David Johnston.
As we approach our country’s 150th birthday, the Governor General challenged Canadians to imagine our country as it could be – a smart and caring nation that holds promise for all. This call to service had a particularly special meaning for community foundations, as he is the patron of the Community Foundation movement in Canada. More importantly, his aspirations for our country mirror those of community foundations from coast to coast. For more than 90 years, Canada’s community foundations have dedicated themselves to building better places to live, work, and play. We are ‘barn-raisers’ by nature, bringing people and resources together to achieve a greater good. So when we considered our contribution to a ‘smart and caring nation’ the answer was clear.
In September of 2014, we were honoured to have His Excellency join us for our 30th Anniversary celebration, and to announce our plans to build a smart and caring community.
The KWCF’s Smart & Caring Grants Program is our new approach to unrestricted granting and aligns with our Foundation’s broader values and mission while providing opportunities for all in our community to participate. The program is designed around established best practices and leverages the operational strengths we have developed over the last 30 years. In addition, since we live in one community encompassing much geography, we felt it was important to ensure that all of the communities we serve are included in the new program. This is a great opportunity to build inclusion and to foster a sense of belonging and importance for all.
Vital Grants support multi-year projects that move the needle on the single most pressing issue as identified in Waterloo Region's Vital Signs® in each of the communities The KWCF serves.
Community Grants have emerged from our long-established Community Fund and support bold single-year projects which can demonstrate an impact on belonging for our citizens.
Barnraising Grants support internal development and realignment projects that improve the ability of our Region’s Community Organizations to make positive change.
