Family Philanthropy

Helping Families Create a Tradition of Giving

Family philanthropy can provide an opportunity for your children to learn - first-hand - about the joy of helping others and the importance of community building. Since 1984, Kitchener Waterloo Community Foundation has supported families in their commitment to building a stronger community.

Establishing a fund through KWCF is typically less costly to administer than other forms of philanthropic giving (such as a private foundation), and it allows you to establish a charitable legacy in your family's name, fulfill multiple charitable interests, and teach giving values to the next generation.

How to get started:

Family involvement is one of the main keys in successful family philanthropy. As a family, discuss the charitable goals that are important to each and every one of you.

'While more difficult and time consuming, this will help to avoid the trap of you and/or your spouse dictating the future to your children. This will also help to ensure that there is less disagreement among siblings after your passing."

Check out our, Family Philanthropy Checklist, and the Family Philanthropy Workbook document to help guide you in this process.
