About The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation

In the words of Winston Churchill, "we make a life by what we give." This quote is especially meaningful to The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation (The KWCF). It speaks to community building, leadership, philanthropy, and empathy. All of these have been at the heart of what The KWCF does since it officially began in 1984. Community foundations are often a community's best kept secret, but our story is simple: We Build, We Invest, and We Lead.

WE BUILD

We build assets and other funds to provide lasting support for our community’s priorities. We make giving easy and effective by accepting a wide variety of gifts, and providing donors with a number of charitable options. You can contribute cash, stocks, property, and other assets. You may establish a fund in your name, or in the name of a loved one. In most cases, your gift qualifies for a maximum tax advantage under federal law.

At The KWCF, asset building also includes knowledge and relationships. By building our knowledge of community issues and opportunities, as well as developing and maintaining strategic relationships, The KWCF provides a strong foundation for community development.

WE INVEST

We know how important it is to invest in our community, so it is at the core of what we do. We invest in our community using all of our assets. We leverage our relationships and our community knowledge to invest dollars strategically to support the areas of critical need facing Kitchener, Waterloo, and area.

We have 149 funds, and hold over $86.9 million in managed assets. To date, we have granted over $41 million to local charities and non-profit organizations who work directly in our communities. When you make a donation to The KWCF, we invest that gift into a permanent endowment fund. Your original gift isn’t spent. Instead, it generates income that is then distributed through grants to support a wide range of charitable causes within our community.  A gift to The KWCF is a gift that gives back to the community forever.

WE LEAD

Our business is building community. We are proud to act as a catalyst to encourage discussion on key topics, engage future leaders in philanthropy, and work towards developing a community with a sense of belonging where everyone can truly make a difference.

Our Mission

The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation improves the quality of life in Kitchener-Waterloo and area, now and for generations to come, by building community endowment, addressing needs through grant making, and providing leadership on key community issues.

What is a Community Foundation?

In the simplest terms, community foundations are charitable organizations dedicated to improving communities in specific geographical areas. They do this by pooling the charitable gifts of donors to create endowment funds and using the investment income to make grants.

The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation is a proud member of Community Foundations of Canada - the national membership organization for the over 191 community foundations across Canada.

Community foundations provide a simple, powerful, and highly personal approach to giving. We offer a variety of giving tools to help people achieve their charitable goals.

You can make a gift of cash, stocks, bonds, real estate, or other assets to your community foundation. Most charitable gifts qualify for maximum tax advantage under federal law.

You can support the issues and organizations you care about the most, all through your community foundation. For more information and ideas on ways to integrate your financial planning with charitable giving, ask your financial advisor or contact us.

Three special features of community foundations

One: Building. We build endowments and other funds to provide lasting support for local priorities. We make giving easy and effective, accepting a wide variety of gifts and providing donors with a number of charitable options. You can contribute cash, stocks, property, and other assets.

Two: Investing. Our foundation's staff and volunteers have an in-depth understanding of the issues, opportunities, and resources that shape our community. We evaluate all aspects of community well being - including social services, education, the environment, health care, youth, seniors, and the arts. We can help you learn more about local organizations and programs that make a difference in areas you care about most.

Three: Leading. Because community foundations support all kinds of charities, we are well positioned to bring people and organizations together, convening diverse voices to address local issues and opportunities. Our business is building community.
