Canada 's community foundations hit $2-billion in assets
National network experiences record-high gifts in 2004
( Kitchener-Waterloo) - Donors made 2004 a banner year for Canada 's community foundations by giving a record-breaking $210 million to foundations across the country, bringing the movement's total assets to more than $2 billion.
"This is great news for communities all across Canada , including right here in Kitchener-Waterloo, said Rosemary Smith, of The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation (KWCF). "A larger asset base means more grants for community groupls like K-W Counselling Services."
Community foundations are one of the largest grantmakers in Canada . Last year they contributed $95-million to thousands of charities all across the country.
"The tech boom led to our largest and highest-profile gifts," said Monica Patten, President and CEO of Community Foundations of Canada (CFC), "but last year was our best ever, thanks to the generosity of an extremely wide range of Canadians."
Last year, more than 800 donors contributed over $1 million to KWCF and more than $1.5 million in grants from endowed funds were awarded to a wide range of charities.
"Community foundations have experienced tremendous growth over the past decade," said Smith. "In 1992, we had 28 foundations working together with $500 million in assets. Today that number has skyrocketed to 146 foundations managing $2 billion. We're proud to be part of such a dynamic network."
The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation improves the quality of life in Kitchener-Waterloo and area, now and for generations to come, by building community endowment, addressing needs through grantmaking, and providing leadership on key community issues.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation grant enables The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation to establish a new role that's all about connections
(Waterloo, ON) - The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation announced today that it has created a new role that will focus on managing grants and on connecting donors with the organizations receiving those grants, a position made possible through The Ontario Trillium Foundation.
"We're very excited that we're able to hire someone in the permanent role of Manager, Grant Services," said Executive Director Rosemary Smith . "The focus is on building even stronger relationships between our donors and our grant recipients. This role creates a real opportunity to bring together people who have a desire to make a financial contribution to this community with organizations that are in need of support."
The Trillium grant amounts to $107,500 paid over 24 months and will fully fund the role during the year 2005, with partial funding provided during the year 2006. Annalee Moore, a Kitchener resident, has been hired in this new role.
In the past, The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation has had a grant coordinator in place to manage the flow of grant applications. By expanding the responsibilities of this role and bringing Moore on board as Manager, Grant Services, Smith believes there is an important opportunity to better understand the needs of the community, and to better meet those needs by connecting not-for-profit
organizations with donors who have the ability and the will to provide financial support.
"This grant represents an investment in our capacity," says Smith. "With this grant, The Ontario Trillium Foundation has invested in our ability to help our donors find meaningful, relevant and sometimes unique ways of contributing to this community."
In addition to grants, Moore will also be responsible for updating and managing The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation Web site, www.kwcf.ca.
The Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Ministry of Culture, receives annually $100 million of government funding generated through Ontario 's charity casino initiative. OTF builds healthy and vibrant communities throughout Ontario by strengthening the capacity of the volunteer sector, through investments in community-based initiatives. The Foundation funds organizations in the arts and culture, environment, human and social services, and sports and recreation sectors.
