FAQ

What is the St. Jacobs Farmers' Market Relief Fund and why was it established?

The St. Jacobs Farmers Market Relief Fund is a fund recently established at The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation in response to the community's desire to support the vendors affected by the fire at St. Jacobs Farmers Market on September 2nd, 2013.

Who started the Fund?

A group of dedicated local community leaders are joining together to help establish the fund, develop the funding criteria as well as provide advice on fund disbursement. Initial leaders around the table included representatives from the Township of Woolwich, the Barnraisers Council, Home Hardware, the Mercedes Corp. as well as local volunteers, Dan Herman and Helen Kaluzny.

How will the St. Jacobs Farmers' Market Vendors receive support?

Before any support goes out into the community, a process must be put in place. Once a set of criteria is developed, a smaller group of volunteers will form a review committee to assess applications for support. If funds are raised beyond the needs of vendors, the committee will direct these funds to appropriate community development projects.

UPDATE!
Since establishing the Market Vendor Relief Fund, the committee has established terms of reference for dispersal of funds and has surveyed impacted vendors to assess financial losses. The preliminary estimate of uninsured losses for the local businesses could exceed $750,000. These losses include assets, wages and business interruption, in many cases for small vendors with specialized products. The KWCF is now focused on the collection of donations to support the vendors impacted, ensuring that they have access to the funds and resources available to get their livelihood back as soon as possible. Donations will be actively sought until December 31, 2013.
